Rector Search – 2020

Grace Episcopal Church is seeking our next Rector. If you are interested in this position, please review our Parish Profile [link to profile]. To view our Office of Transitions Ministries (OTM) profile, and to submit your resume and cover letter, please contact The Rev. Carrie Schofield-Broadbent, Canon for Transitions and Church Development, Episcopal Diocese of Central New York, at  carriesb@cnyepiscopal.org

Search Process Overview

Rector search and transition is a multi-step process that begins with the vestry appointing a search committee. This is followed by a period of parish self-study to reconfirm the parish’s core values and ministries.  The results of the self-reflection are summarized in the parish profile, which provides a description of the parish, its history, goals for the future and what it seeks in a new rector.  The search committee then submits the parish profile and the OTM questionnaire to the Diocese.  With the posting of the approved parish profile on the parish website, the search for a new rector is officially open!  Interested candidates respond to the Diocese’s Office of Transition Ministries.  All candidates are screened first by the Diocese.  The search committee then reviews the vetted candidates and interviews finalists.  The Bishop also meets with the finalist candidates. The search committee recommends the selected candidate to the vestry.  The vestry votes to call the proposed candidate as rector and informs the Bishop.  After a letter of agreement has been signed, the rector-elect can be announced to the parish.

Grace Church Search Committee

In January 2020, the vestry appointed a search committee for our new priest.  The committee members are Jamal Adams, Kate Auwaerter (chair), Dan Bilow, Lou Clark, Mary Lou Clark, Shaniece Clark, Susan Keeter, and Ernestine Patterson.

2020 Progress Update

The search committee met in person several times prior to the COVID 19 emergency shutdown.  The committee used those meetings to reacquaint itself with the search process and to meet with The Rev.  Jacqueline Schmitt  to discuss her insights as Grace’s interim priest-in-charge.

Meeting remotely, the committee updated the parish profile and the OTM documents, which were developed after an all-parish survey and small group discussions in 2018.  These documents were submitted to and approved by the Diocese.

Repair of the parish website delayed our progress a bit, but the website up and running again, and the search committee is pleased to announce that the search for a new priest at Grace Church has officially opened!

Moving forward:

The search committee will keep the parish updated as the search for a rector unfolds.  It is the search committee’s intention to keep the search open for a sufficient period to attract a diversity of candidates.  Everyone is invited to read the parish profile.  If you have any suggestions, comments or leads for candidates, please contact search committee chairperson Kate Auwaerter, kateauwaerter@gmail.com.
